“If you light a lamp for someone it will also brighten your own path” ~Buddhist Proverb
Sometimes in life we have a conversation with someone who’s going thru a rough time. Seems like it usually happens when we’re having a hard time ourselves. It’s an inevitable, sometimes unavoidable time. Think back to any one of those times and replay the words you said. Did you notice that perhaps you told that person something you needed to hear? Or did you tell that person about a time you went thru and how you got thru it? Maybe when you did that you felt empowered or Inspired to conquer what you’re going thru at that time.
Every so often in life we have conversations with others who are having a hard time in their lives. Then there’s the occasional times when we’re going thru our own problems but we still help the person reaching out to us for help. When we do this one of a couple things ends up happening. Either that person helps us to get out of our own heads or we say something to that person that we need to hear.
Imagine this scenario. You’re feeling pretty low about yourself. Maybe it’s because you’re a couple pounds heavier than you want to be or you made a big mistake and you’re kicking yourself over it. Perhaps you’re even stressed about a problem. Whatever it is, you’ve been feeling really low about yourself for the last couple of hours, days or weeks. Then, seemingly out of the blue, you get a call from a friend who’s going thru something the same as or very similar to what you are going thru.
As you are talking to this friend and giving them suggestions as to what to do, suddenly a light bulb comes on. You realize you’re telling your friend the same thing you need to hear to help yourself. The light bulb comes on in your head and it has lit your own path for you. The other thing that sometimes happens is that by helping your friend you are distracting yourself from your own problems. When that happens you’re able to go back to your problem with refreshed thoughts and eyes.
Thought for the day: The next time someone calls on you for help, whether or not you’re going thru something, be sure to help that person. You never know what kind of little insights you will discover for your own life.
